Our last update moved Gainr's weekly Coach plan to the center of the app. Since then, most of our work has gone into the part of training that happens between sets: logging from your wrist, checking how an exercise is done, and sharing a session when it goes well.
Here is what's shipped since June.
Gainr on Apple Watch
Gainr now has an Apple Watch app. Start a workout on your iPhone and the watch app opens with it, so you can leave your phone in your bag and log from your wrist.
On the watch you can:
- Log sets with weight, reps and RIR (reps in reserve), prefilled with your next set
- Move between exercises by swiping, with each exercise on its own page
- Run timed sets in a full-screen countdown you can pause and resume
- Get a rest alert when your rest timer ends, showing what your next set is
- See live heart rate and calories on a separate metrics page
Your iPhone stays in charge of the workout. Sets you log on the watch go through the same session as sets logged on your phone, so your history, personal records and Coach plan all see them.
Apple Health
Workouts tracked with the watch are saved to Apple Health. Gainr also saves your average heart rate and active calories with the session, so you can see them in your workout history later. You can review Gainr's Apple Health access from your profile.
If you're new to RIR, our RPE and RIR chart explains how to rate your sets.
Form Demos for Exercises
Tap How to on an exercise during a workout and Gainr shows you how it's done:
- Start and finish photos of the movement, from the open-source Free Exercise DB
- Numbered steps for setting up and performing the lift
- A muscle map highlighting the primary and secondary muscles worked
Not every exercise has a demo yet. When one doesn't, Gainr gives you a link to search YouTube for that exercise's form instead.
This matters most when Coach puts something new in your week. You shouldn't have to leave the app to figure out what a "spider curl" is.
Shareable Workout and PR Cards
When you finish a session or set a personal record, you can turn it into a shareable card with your stats. The cards are sized for Stories (1080 × 1920).
- Workout cards come from the session summary. If you trained with your Apple Watch, the card can include your average heart rate and active calories.
- PR cards come from the personal records section of an exercise's progress page.
You can also share a workout as a link. Anyone with the link can view a summary of the session, and the link includes a preview image for messaging and social apps. You can disable the link at any time. Shared pages don't include your name, email or private notes.
Image cards are available in the iOS and Android apps. Workout links also work from the web app.
Coach Improvements
Workouts done on another day now reschedule the plan. If Coach had your lower body session on Tuesday and you did it on Wednesday instead, Gainr moves it in your weekly plan when you finish. If the rest of the week has no free day for a make-up session, the remaining workouts are rebalanced. You'll see a notice when this happens, with an Undo button when the move can be reversed.
Coach chat is easier to read. Replies now display formatting like headings, bullet and numbered lists, and bold text, instead of raw markdown symbols. Longer answers, like a breakdown of your week, are much easier to scan.
If you haven't seen the Coach plan yet, our Coach plan redesign post explains how it works.
Two Panes on Wider Screens
On screens wide enough, such as iPad and the inner display of iPhone Duo, Gainr now uses a two-pane layout on the Coach, profile and workout session screens instead of stretching a phone layout across the whole display. On iPhone Duo, the panes meet at the fold, so nothing sits on the crease.
What's Free
Everything in this post outside of coaching works on the free plan, including the Apple Watch app, form demos and share cards.
Free includes unlimited workout logging, two saved workouts or programs, and two AI generation credits. New accounts get a free 14-day Coach preview.
Gainr Pro unlocks ongoing coaching: weekly plans, plan adjustments and coach chat, plus unlimited workouts, programs and AI generation. Prices are shown in the app before purchase.
Want to try a structured program first? The 4-day upper/lower split is a good place to start, and you can log it in Gainr on your phone or your watch.
